Norman Blake is a seriously good acoustic guitar player. Make that seriously great. After playing big bodied Martins for most of his career he has recently changed his guitars of choice to small bodied acoustics.
Among his favourites are the 12 fret Martin 00 models of the early '30's upon which this Collings guitar is based. In Mr. Blake's estimation, the 12 fret Martin 00 size has the perfect balance between size of top and depth of sides to create the ultimate guitar tone.
That said, until Bill Collings recreated these guitars there had not been a guitar made since those early Martins to rival them. This one does. The top is Adirondack red spruce, the most prized wood for steel string acoutsic guitar tops, the same wood used on those early Martins and very rarely used today.
The back and sides are rosewood, showing an uncommonly straight grain, which is good. The neck is mahogany. The width of the neck is perfect for fingerpicking. But not quite as wide as the old Martins, so you can also strum it or flat pick it quite easily.
The guitar is pefectly balanced across the strings and the voice projects far more than you'd expect from a guitar of this size. The sound is rich with suprising depth in the basses and cutting trebles.
