Fender Jazzmaster 1961 Sunburst

In 1961, this guitar was the top of the heap in the Fender line. The Tele's and Strats were looking a tad dated and Fender had introduced the Jazzmaster in 1959 to add some sparkle at the top end, in both tone and looks.

Unfortunately, the Jazzmaser didn't appeal to the jazz players but when surf music came out, the sparkly high-end tone and futuristic offset body of the Jazzer seemed to really capture the market.

The Jaguar, introduced in 1962, also claimed a big part of this new market. Then Jimi Hendrix burst on the scene in 1966, surf music was dead in the water and the Strat reclaimed its place at the top of the Fender tree.

The Jazzmaster took a long dive and didn't look like it would ever come back to the surface. Now lets fast forward to the turn of the century. Over the next few years old Teles and Strats would reach new highs in both reputation and price.

Most players couldn't afford these vintage guitars so they turned in increasing numbers to the Jazzmasters and Jaguars and guess what? They discovered they were great guitars and relative bargains on the vintage market.

Today we see Jazzmasters successfully used by rock, country and blues musicians. And this one is a great example of the model. A '61 in original condition, with its original swing tag hanging off the tuners. If it was a Strat, imagine how much it would be worth today: $80K? Maybe more. As a great vintage Fender, clean with no issues, imagine how far it has to go.
