Martin Ditson Dreadnought
Detailed Images
This Martin Ditson Dreadnaught reissue commemorates the very first dreadnought guitar, designed by Martin for the Oliver Ditson Company of New York way back in 1916. Like the originals, the peghead is slotted and the neck meets the body at the 12th fret.
This particular guitar is one of four prototypes in existence, two of them are in the Martin Museum, one is with the Ditson guitar company and this is the last one, what an incredibly collectable piece!
The unique voice of the Ditson Dreadnaught has rarely been experienced over the last 80 years, but at last, this spectacular sounding and historically important guitar is once again made available from C. F. Martin & Co.
While most any guitar player will instantly recognize a Dreadnought, very few have ever encountered an original 1916-1930 version, as only a handful are known, to exist. The name Dreadnaught, commonly spelled with an "a" by Americans at the time, referred to the era's largest and most powerful battleships.
The Ditson Dreadnaught 111 is patterned from a 1924 model - the predecessor to Martin's 12-Fret D-18 Dreadnought and the first Dreadnought to incorporate Martin's famous "X" bracing.
Both the Pickguard and rosette are the vintage design. Mahogany back and sides, Adirondack spruce top with scalloped Golden Era style braces, Brazilian rosewood binding, backstrip & endpiece, multi-layered black/maple soundhole rosette, ebony pyramid bridge, tortoise pickguard.
Modified V-shape neck, ebony fretboard (1-7/8" nut, 25.4" scale), abalone dot position inlays, slotted headstock with Brazilian rosewood veneer (no decal, inlay, or stamp), Waverly/Sloane 3-on-plate gears with ivoroid buttons. Fossil ivory nut & saddle, gloss finish including neck, aging toner on top. Inside label signed by C.F.Martin IV.
This is a wonderful sounding guitar, and an unusual guitar in it's feel, with a rightful place in any fine collection of Martin guitars.
